LETTER: Thanks to the Constitution, we know facts of Trump’s offenses

To Ozaukee Press:

In a recent letter to Ozaukee Press, the author stated that she and her acquaintances don’t believe the headlines in newspapers relating to Donald Trump. She is accusing Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the New York Times and the Washington Post of lying. Nothing could be further from the truth.  All of our country’s major newspapers have many dedicated reporters and editors and publishers who strive to bring us the facts on every subject they report on.

I have never read any false articles relating to Donald Trump. We know about the hush money payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal. We know that Trump sided with Putin in Helsinki over our own intelligence community in regards to Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Because of the Mueller report, we know that Paul Manafort, Mike Flynn and others were charged and convicted of crimes. We know countless Trump administration employees have had ethics violations. And more recently, we know that Trump asked the Ukrainian president and the government of China to investigate a potential 2020 presidential rival. These are the facts, pure and simple.

Many of Trump’s supporters claim to love the U.S. Constitution. As Democrats, we love the Constitution too. And that document clearly spells out the protections of the free press. It also spells out the responsibilities and the duties of the three co-equal branches of our government. One of the responsibilities of the legislative branch, the U.S. Congress, is the oversight of the executive branch.

We now have an impeachment inquiry in the House of Representatives to investigate Donald Trump. The House is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. The impeachment process is spelled out in the Constitution. The law and order Republicans should applaud this process. The laws of this country apply to everyone. Trump is not the king. He is a government employee. If Trump is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors, he must be held accountable.

Of course, the Trump supporters continue to recite the same ridiculous talking points of Trump – “deep state, hoax, witch hunt, fake news.” But thanks to the press, all the facts are right here for us to see.
