LETTER: Street Festival gave families old-fashioned fun downtown

To Ozaukee Press:

 My mother once told me, “Some things in life are worth waiting for.”

Main Street’s Covid-delayed Street Festival was worth the wait and then some. One of the larger crowds seen on Franklin Street in recent years enjoyed the music, fun, food and occasional beverage.

The family groups that attended made the event reminiscent of the July “Fish-tival,” which also generated good old-fashioned family fun.

As I approached a family group assembled in front of the former Smith Bros. Coffee Shop, I was asked if I knew why some cities demolish their downtowns and rebuild and others (like Port Washington) save and refurbish the stylish old buildings.  

The answer was simple: Community leaders with vision and a thriving Port Washington Historical Society.

The opportunity to continue this good work and make our downtown/marina district stronger and more sustainable will begin shortly with the selection of a consultant to lead the way. Stay informed and watch for your opportunity to participate.
