LETTER: Safer nuclear fission will soon give us abundant clean energy
To Ozaukee Press:
In his letter to the editor is last week’s Ozaukee Press, Peter Federspiel correctly wrote, “I believe in global warming. Something has to be done.”
He went on to say that there isn’t enough electric capacity generation to power all cars. There is an answer, and it is almost upon us.
The first-generation nuclear fission reactors are being replaced with molten salt reactors. These are much less expensive to build and are carbon dioxide free and therefore address global warming.
They are fail-safe. If there is a problem, the reactor shuts itself down without operator intervention. They are economic to fuel, using thorium, which is three times more abundant than uranium.
Molten salt reactors are under construction in the U.S., Canada, China, Russia, Indonesia and the Netherlands. Cleaner, safer and abundant electric power is at hand.
