LETTER: Port pollution memory points to treasure of clean air, water

People living in Port Washington 60 or 70 years ago remember when the air in the city was not always clean. Many times, the white sheets, white shirts, white nurse’s uniforms (yes, nurses wore starched white uniforms) that were hung outside to dry were covered with black flakes of soot from the pride of the city—the coal-burning Wisconsin Electric power plant with its multiple chimneys.   

Clean air and clean water are treasures.   Keep an eye on your lake. Keeping it clean is easier and cheaper than rescuing it after it’s been polluted. Cleaning up the Fox River in our area has taken years and many millions of dollars.
