LETTER: As municipal judge, Cain has shown skills circuit bench needs

To Ozaukee Press:

I’ve known Steve Cain since the earliest days of his legal career. I’ve watched as his skills developed into those of a fine litigator, a lawyer who provides great value to his clients as he represents their interests in civil and criminal cases across southeastern Wisconsin.

I also remember clearly when he took over a municipal court system whose reputation had become greatly tarnished. Under Steve’s leadership as municipal court judge, the Mid-Moraine Municipal Court has grown into an example of fairness and efficiency. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Simply look at how city after city has chosen to join that court system after Steve became judge; that testifies for itself.

Steve Cain has the experience and technical excellence to be an outstanding Circuit Court judge.

Six years ago I wrote the only other letter of this kind I had ever written. The Ozaukee County district attorney’s office is the heaviest user of court resources in the county, involved in over two-thirds of all case filings each year. As someone who had been entrusted with your vote, I felt an obligation to weigh in on a subject that was so central to my mission. That decision ultimately proved to carry great political and personal costs. This one may as well, but as one whose primary interest is the good of our justice system, I’m compelled to again offer it.

I know with absolute certainty the kind of judge Steve Cain is, and will be when elected to the Ozaukee County Circuit Court bench. He will bring excellence and leadership to our court system for the next generation.

Contrasted to this, despite having practiced in our court system for more than 25 years and being extremely active in community affairs, I simply don’t know his opponent. I’ve never met her, or seen her in court. I don’t believe she’s ever appeared in a criminal case in Ozaukee County. While she may have great potential, the Circuit Court bench is not a training ground, and shouldn’t be treated as such when there’s another candidate who is so perfectly suited for the position. Please join me in voting for Steve Cain. Ozaukee County deserves this.
