LETTER: Men are still passing laws that violate women’s rights in U.S.

To Ozaukee Press:

Recently the Texas legislature passed a law that impinges on women’s right to reproductive health. This body of lawmakers is 74% men and mostly Republican.

Women have been fighting for their rights since 1848. Yet still today in many states, men pass laws that adversely affect women.  

More than a million women marched in Washington, D.C. after the Trump inauguration. Their statement was: “Our dignity, our character, our rights have all been under attack, and a platform of hate and division assumed power yesterday. But the president is not America. We are America, and we are here to stay.”  

Yet states controlled by GOP legislatures are trying to turn America back to the 1950s.  

Texas legislators say they are concerned about life but will not encourage masks in schools and are skeptical about Covid vaccines.

What should we expect from Wisconsin representatives? This past August, Sen. André Jacque, R-De Pere, a conservative lawmaker and a vocal opponent of mask and vaccine mandates, tested positive for Covid-19.  He confirmed that family members also tested positive for the virus. Jacque has six children, including an infant. Ron Johnson, who says publicly that he won’t get vaccinated, uses his position in Congress to advocate for unproven Covid treatments. What are these men thinking or not thinking?

It’s time for another million-woman march. They know it’s time; mothers and daughters and grandmothers will take the role and take charge. Women can seize the mantle of national leadership.
