LETTER: Legislators, take note: Voters want fair voting district maps

To Ozaukee Press:

I am a born-and-raised proud Wisconsinite and 40-year Ozaukee County resident. 

I’ve voted Democrat and Republican and even worked on Republican campaigns. 

But I will never forget last week’s election. 

We were in the middle of a pandemic and Wisconsin voters were shown a total disregard for both the right to vote and human life.  

Gov. Evers tried to make numerous election adjustments out of concern for the voters, albeit some were very late.

However, Republican legislators fought all possible accommodations, even appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Their court brief stated, “The governor does not have the constitutional or statutory authority to modify…elections.

That authority belongs to the Legislature.” If this is their legal claim, why didn’t the Legislature do anything?

Rather than the voters’ safety, the Republicans appeared to be more concerned about the Supreme Court race and bolstering Dan Kelly’s chances to win by keeping the election as scheduled.

It didn’t work.

His election win would have given the Republicans more support on the court for their continued gerrymandering.                 

We shouldn’t want gerrymandering on either side.

Our legislators need to show us their moral backbone and fix this.

Before we vote in November, we should ask each candidate, “Will you support a non-partisan procedure to draw fair districting maps for our state?”
