LETTER: Key issue in governor race is ability to manage our state

David Crowley’s decision to suspend his gubernatorial campaign, endorse another candidate and then re-enter the governor race raises legitimate questions about judgment and campaign strategy.

Whether voters view those decisions as understandable or as a political misstep, they deserve careful consideration alongside his record and the records of every candidate seeking the office.

David Crowley’s decisions deserve scrutiny, but they also remind us of a larger question: what qualities should we be looking for in our next governor? Too often, statewide elections become overshadowed by national political narratives. While those issues have their place, choosing a governor should come down to leadership, judgment, administrative competence and the ability to manage Wisconsin’s government effectively.

I haven’t decided whom I’ll support in the Democratic primary. Before casting my vote, I’ll be asking two questions: Who would make the best governor for Wisconsin and who gives Democrats the strongest chance to win the general election? I hope other voters will ask those same questions.
