LETTER: It’s time for county to move on park campsite expansion

To Ozaukee Press:

Ozaukee County’s plans to increase the number of campsites at county parks as described in last week’s Ozaukee Press are almost laughable. We have been promised campground expansion for several years with little progress. It appears still to be two to three years away.  

Campsites here are paltry compared to nearby counties. Fond du lac has 102, Dodge 108, and Waukesha  County 110. We have 17. This means that recreation dollars are spent elsewhere. As in the movie, if you build it they will come. One would hope that the parks manager would converse with campers for input on campground design and services. Putting campsites across the road from a building makes no sense. What’s next—putting them by a wastewater treatment plant? 

There is no mention of a waste dumping station. This is  a standard installation at all public campgrounds. For RV sites, fire rings should be 15 feet from the driveway, not 8 feet like some at the Waubedonia Park campground. 

As confirmed by the parks manager, camping is getting more popular every year. It is time for our park system to step up and upgrade our camping facilities instead of pushing it down the road.
