LETTER: Indian team mascots don’t bother most Native Americans

To Ozaukee Press:

We are constantly told that Native Americans object to school and professional athletic teams using Indian names and mascots. But the truth is that while tribal governments and lobbying organizations call for their elimination, members of tribes are by and large not bothered or offended by them.

Poll after poll has shown that large majorities — 80%, sometimes even 90% — of Native Americans have no problem with the use of such names, mascots or imagery.

Maybe the real question we should be asking is why aren’t tribal leaders representing the will of their members?
