LETTER: If you haven’t voted recently, you could be rejected at polls

As you prepare for July 4 parades, fireworks and honoring those who serve, this is also a good time to check the status of your voter registration.

Even if you think you’re already registered, checking the status of your registration is important and easy.  

Did you know that Wisconsin has a law that requires the Elections Commission to deactivate voter registrations following a general election if the person has not voted in the previous four years and has not responded to a mailed postcard notice?

In 2017, the Wisconsin Elections Commission mailed over 380,000 such notices and subsequently deactivated slightly more than 350,000 voters.

About 190,000 of those deactivated voters had not responded to the postcard notice.

Unfortunately, this year’s spring election uncovered some problems in this system and there were reports of voters who showed up at the polls in April and were not allowed to vote until they re-registered.

Don’t give up your right and responsibility to participate in our government. 

If you recently received a postcard notice from the Election Commission, don’t ignore it.

By going to the website myvote.wi.gov, you can quickly check the status of your voter registration, find out how to update an address or name change, find your polling location and what’s on your ballot, request an absentee ballot, or begin the online registration process.          

Be informed.

Be ready to vote in the Aug. 14 primary and the Nov. 6 general election.
