LETTER: If fascism definition sounds familiar, what’s next for U.S.?

Fascism destroyed many countries in Europe nearly a century ago and caused millions of deaths. It is important to know what it is.

Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian ultranationalist political ideology and movement characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, and strong regimentation of society and the economy. It typically involves a dictatorial leader, a centralized autocratic government and strong militarism, often accompanied by aggressive nationalism and forcible suppression of dissent and a belief in a natural social hierarchy.

Fascism emphasizes a strong centralized state with absolute power often led by a dictator or single party. It promotes intense national pride and loyalty, often to the exclusion or denigration of other nations and groups.

Fascist regimes typically crush dissent and opposition through censorship, propaganda and violence. Fascism glorifies military strength and expansion, often involving aggressive foreign policies.

Fascism frequently promotes the idea of natural social hierarchy, with some groups deemed superior to others. Fascist leaders often cultivate a cult of personality, presenting themselves as charismatic and infallible.

If you find yourself saying, “This sounds like something we are witnessing right now,” it is time to ask yourself, what can we do to stop this?
