LETTER: As a first step to fair districts, let voters’ opinions be heard
To Ozaukee Press:
As the drawing of congressional and legislative districts is considered, we should try to recognize that the existing problem is created by both political parties. Democrats do it in Maryland and Republicans do it in Wisconsin. They are, of course, not the only states involved.
Let’s think about fair redistricting as an effort to help our citizens feel that each vote does count, not as an anti-incumbent initiative.
In approaching this task, let’s create a system which does not open the door to appeals that circle back to elected people who today seem so divided. The first step is letting voters express their opinion.
Let us realize that a few states such as Iowa have come up with answers for drawing fairer districts. If Iowa can do it, surely we can too.
