LETTER: Election deniers continue to attack the heart of democracy
To Ozaukee Press:
Voting is a rightful source of U.S. pride as our non-violent way of holding elected representatives accountable. In this 106th year since women gained the vote, I am concerned about efforts by elected officials to cast doubt, without evidence, on our elections. These are the very elections that brought them to power.
At the federal level, the House has twice passed the SAVE act which requires proof of citizenship when registering to vote. This legislation, a solution without a problem, falsely implies widespread voting by non-citizens. Federal agents recently confiscated ballots and voter records related to the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia; that is the election that President Trump lost but continues to claim he won. Wisconsin’s own Sen. Ron Johnson regularly touts voting “irregularities” on national news programs.
Wisconsin’s majority GOP Legislature has spent millions in taxpayer dollars over the past 15 years to defend its drawing of voting districts that are non-competitive and advantage their own party. This Legislature has also uniformly disparaged the Democrat governor and refused to attend his special sessions, defying the fact that the people of Wisconsin twice voted Evers into office.
I will be looking for all candidates who want my vote this year to loudly defend the integrity of our Wisconsin voting system. And if they can’t, show me the evidence.
