LETTER: Efforts by many saved condos from another flooding disaster

To Ozaukee Press:

On May 17, Valley Creek again overtopped its banks and raced down Lake Street near Veterans Park in Port Washington. This has happened twice before with disastrous results for the Lighthouse Condominiums. This time, however, disaster was averted; not by chance, but due to the hard work of several individuals who I would like to recognize publicly.

The Lighthouse Condominium board approved a comprehensive construction plan aimed at preventing flood waters from entering our lower level garage. I would like to thank board members Dave Woodard, Dan Laurence and Margina Repinski for dedicated work developing and executing the plan.

Board member and building manager Jeff Verhagen was the person who coordinated the work and had to work through various roadblocks to successful completion.

Other residents offering assistance were Bill Martens and Karen Oleski.

We would like to also recognize Aldermen Mike Gasper and John Sigwart, who helped keep lines of communication open with the city.

None of this could have been accomplished without the guidance of former Port Washington Public Works Director Bob Dreblow, who we hired to assist the board in formulation of plans and to oversee the construction as it progressed.

And, of course, thanks to all the residents who supported the board’s decision and agreed to fund the project. Our success depended on the teamwork of great friends and neighbors.
