LETTER: Data center push is shabby treatment of Port neighbors

The new $8 billion Port Washington data center is now a done deal.

To my knowledge, only until recently were the residents of Waubeka, Saukville and Fredonia made fully aware of the significant impact it may have on one or more of their communities as the power companies lay out their plans. 

These plans include the construction of extremely tall transmission towers to route power to this energy-thirsty monster. The towers will be here forever.

These communities contain some of the most significant rural areas of our beautiful county. They contain century-old farms, historical buildings, schools, environmental gems and residents who enjoy the peace and beauty of the countryside.

Only after the data center was approved did these folks come to learn the possible impact the data center would bring to them. 

The mayor of Port Washington is quoted, when referring to the data center agreement, “It also details the significant tax revenues and infrastructure improvements the project will provide.” 

Perhaps for Port, but it will be to the huge detriment of Port’s neighbors.

Shame on the Port Washington mayor and Common Council for bringing this blight to their neighboring communities.
