LETTER: Citizens confronted legislators with calls for fair voting maps

To Ozaukee Press:

I felt a ray of hope for our democracy last Thursday, even though it was amidst politics as usual. More than 200 people from across the state traveled to Madison for the only public hearing being held on the new voting district maps offered by the Republican legislature.

In front of joint legislative committees, the people of Wisconsin and 20 organizations testified against the proposed maps because they repeated the significant partisan gerrymander of the current maps drawn in 2011.

The maps drawn 10 years ago guaranteed one party would rule our Legislature for a decade. A panel of federal judges ruled that Wisconsin’s 2011 redistricting plan, created in secret by Republican leaders, was an “unconstitutional political gerrymander.”

The cost to taxpayers to create the 2011 maps was reported as $431,000 and millions more were spent to defend these maps in courts.

No one at the hearing, either legislator or citizen, offered any rationale as to why partisan gerrymandering is good for Wisconsin. Neither political party should be able to select maps giving itself an election advantage. Taxpayers can’t afford another decade of partisan voting maps, nor do we deserve it.

There’s still time to let your state legislators know that this time we want fair maps.
