LETTER: Christmas wish for Packers: win, honor National Anthem

To Ozaukee Press:

What a truly terrific Christmas greeting from the Schmit Bros. car dealership in last week’s Ozaukee Press!

I found †he two-page, full-color ad so inspiring that I used it as part of my decoration for this Christmas season outside of my home on Fredonia’s main street, along with the Knights of Columbus “Keep Christ in Christmas” poster.

I even added a Green Bay Packers poster to the Nativity scene, with a prayer that this year the Packers will not donate to a visiting team a victory that leads to the Super Bowl, as they did last year in losing their playoff game to Tampa Bay.

In the game last January, the Packers did not even come out of their Lambeau Field locker room to honor our National Anthem. They did not show up to honor our military veterans, just as they failed to really show up for the rest of the game.

Dreamer that I am, wouldn’t it be great if the Packers not only won the Super Bowl this February, but as they received the Lombardi trophy they would honor the motto of Lombardi himself: “God is first in my life. Family is second. And football is third.”

As a coach at West Point, before he coached with the New York Giants and became the head coach of the Packers, Lombardi always had a great respect
for the military. He would never tolerate any player who would not honor our flag.          Today’s clueless players, who have little understanding of sports history, have a lot to learn from him.

Vince Lombardi’s stature goes far beyond mere football. Now all we need is Robert DeNiro, who once promised to play Lombardi on the big screen, to finally fulfill that promise. Miracles still happen.
