LETTER: Cain’s political endorsements raise independence concerns

To Ozaukee Press:

In marketing materials for the Ozaukee County judicial race, candidate Steve
Cain listed several Republican state elected officials, along with the embattled and outgoing Judge Joseph Voiland, and then asked, “Why are these leaders supporting Steve?”

My question and concern is to why any judicial candidate should tout one-sided endorsements. As a 20-year lawyer and
litigator, I know that our democracy depends on an independent judicial branch. The faith and trust we have in our court system is because of the very fact that judges are non-partisan. They are not to be beholden to one party or the other. They are to be independent, fair, impartial and balanced.

Lady Justice herself is a personification of the moral force in our judicial system. If the scales come in tipped, how could one expect the scales to ever again be balanced?

It is no coincidence that Lady Justice is a blindfolded woman holding a scale. The candidate who touts a non-partisan balance is Angela Foy.
