LETTER: ‘A serious and studied judge,’ Crawford is right court choice
To Ozaukee Press:
I’ve been fortunate to meet candidate Judge Susan Crawford twice as she is
touring the state to let people get to know her. I sense in her quiet demeanor that she is a serious and studied judge who is professional and cares about people when she applies the law.
Of course, I cringe when I see those disgusting commercials against her that have been funded by Elon Musk. Until we can get this kind of money out of elections we just have to do the work for ourselves to figure out who a person really is.
Crawford’s opponent, Brad Schimel, has systemic failures to protect women.
We’ve read reliable journalism that two years into his term as attorney general 6,000 rape kits went untested. He opposes a woman’s right to choose for her body under any circumstances. While personally opposed to abortion, I am for a woman’s choice for her own health care decisions.
I am a retired teacher. In 2011, collective bargaining was taken away through
Act 10 from teachers and state workers but not firefighters and police. It was a harsh blow to our rights that affected our salaries, benefits and working conditions. Worse, it affected teacher recruitment and retention in the profession I hold dear.
Last December, a judge ruled that Act 10 was unconstitutional because it cherry-picked professions to be denied union
rights. That court ruling was appealed and may reach the Supreme Court soon. Brad Schimel has been public about his support for continuing to deny union representation for teachers and other public employees.
For these reasons, I will vote on April 1 for Judge Susan Crawford for the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
