Late summer events at bog announced

Late summer activities sponsored by the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog have been announced.

Ferns of the Cedarburg Bog will be discussed by master naturalist Freda van den Broek from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 6.

Van den Broek has been exploring ferns in the Cedarburg Bog for more than a decade and will lead a walk along the north end of the bog to discover the ferns there, their life cycle and some of the adaptations that make these plants so fascinating.

Those attending should meet at the Highway 33 parking lot at the north end of the bog and dress for the weather.

The Mystery of Migration will be discussed by Bill Volkert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Mequon Nature Preserve.

A bird banding demonstration will be held at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Mequon Nature Preserve.

Glacial Geology will be discussed by  Bill Kean from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 27.

Kean will talk about the local glacial geology and explore the reasons for the bog’s unique formations and landscape.   A walk through the upland woods will follow the talk.

“Understanding and Responding to Threats to Birds” will be discussed by Peter Marra at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Mequon Nature Preserve.

The annual fall potluck picnic will be held from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5.

From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., Jim Reinartz and other directors will lead hikes into the bog and woods, and from 4:30 to 6:30  p.m. the annual meeting and picnic will be held. 

Those attending should bring a side dish or dessert to pass.  The Friends of the Cedarburg Bog will provide burgers, brats and beverages.  

Unless noted, walks meet at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saukville Field Station on Blue Goose Road. Pets are not allowed.
