Junior Gabby Klas continued her strong play in the second game of the season to help the Ozaukee High School girls’ basketball team to a 58-47 victory over visiting Manitowoc Lutheran in their Big East Conference opener Nov. 30.

Klas scored 20 points, including a trio of baskets from beyond the arc, leading her team to a come-from-behind victory.

It was a game full of offensive runs by both teams.

“We started off a little slow against Manitowoc Lutheran, and they got out to an early lead,” Ozaukee coach Jason Pollard said.

The Warriors trailed most of the first half, before going on an 11-point run to take a 30-25 lead into the break.

“We were able to outshoot our opponents in all aspects (twos, threes and free throws) and outrebound them,” Pollard said.

The Lancers opened the second half with a run of their own to tie the game at 40-40, but the Warriors built a 12-point advantage with just more than three minutes to play, 54-42.

“Manitowoc Lutheran was a solid team and we had to be on top of our game to come out with a victory, and we did that,” Pollard said.

Klas added seven rebounds and four steals. Cami Miller led Ozaukee in rebounding with 10 and had four steals. Sophie Uhlenberg scored 13 points and had five steals. Freshmen Caitlin Weyker added nine points and Natalie Miller chipped in six.

Emily Marohn had 10 points to lead the Lancers.

Last Thursday, the Warriors got doubled up by 2019 defending conference champion Oostburg, 64-32.

“We got the looks we wanted to get, but our shots did not fall and Oostburg’s did.  Some of our players got in foul trouble and we had to tweak our game plan.”

“We turned the ball over a lot, even on unforced ones, and Oostburg took advantage of it. Tonight, we certainly did not play up to our expectation of Warrior basketball.”

Oostburg held Klas scoreless. Uhlenberg led the Warriors with eight points. Weyker scored five and had three steals. Madison Karmasin had four assists.

Ozaukee got another shot at Oostburg on the road on Monday. They played at St. Mary Catholic on Tuesday. They host Sheboygan Lutheran on Friday and play at Kohler on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
