Katte arms carry CG-Belgium baseball

The Katte brothers led the Cedar Grove-Belgium High School baseball team to two victories in two pitchers’ duels in two days last week.

Last Friday, the Rockets won at Sheboygan Lutheran, 2-1, in eight innings.

Brad Katte threw 99 pitches in seven innings, whiffing 13. He allowed two hits and walked one. Katte leads the state in strikeouts with 64 in 28-2/3 innings, according to wissports.net.

In the eighth inning, the Rockets scored the winning run when Jacob Bohlman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded with two outs. Matt Poull had walked, Wesley Katte got a base hit and Alex Acevedo walked.

Zach Zimpelman struck out three batters in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Wesley Katte went 3-for-4.

“Without Wesley Katte, we don’t win that game,” coach Tom Race said.

Last Thursday, Wesley Katte got the win over Port Washington by pitching four innings. In 58 pitches, he allowed one earned run, one hit, struck out four and walked two.

Poull pitched the final two innings, whiffing one and walking four. Race said he kept his composure when things weren’t going well. Cayden Fischer went the final inning, whiffing two.

The Rockets scored in the second inning on a Robbie Tharp RBI single.

In the sixth, Tharp was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that turned out to be the winning run.

Fischer had a double, steal and scored a run. Tharp was 1-for-1 with a single, walk and was hit by a pitch.

“I’d rather hit the ball but I’ll take a win,” Race said.

The Rockets (6-3) host Reedsville on Friday and St. Mary Central on Monday, May 6.

Port at one point had a man on third and no outs but didn’t score.

“We had runners on every inning but one. We didn’t get the clutch hit, didn’t bring in the runs,” coach C.J Koehler said.

Brayden Thompson was a bright spot. He pitched five-plus innings and allowed two hits on three runs, whiffing two and walking three.

“He threw an awesome game as a freshman,” Koehler said.

Port went on to split a double header with Hartford last Friday in two tight games, winning 4-3 and losing 7-6.

In the win, Ethan Bornhoefer threw a complete game on 72 pitches, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk while whiffing three.

“It was a lot of just Ethan pounding the zone and letting the defense play,” Koehler said.

Doubles by Patrick Lippe and George Klassen helped plate two run in the first inning. A Klassen double and Rob Ross’ fielder’s choice scored one in the fourth.

Marcus Schmit drove in the winning run in the fifth inning with a single.

In the loss, Port outhit Hartford, 11-6, but stranded too many runners.

The Pirates scored four in the seventh inning to go up, 6-4, Ross, Xavier Deal and Joe Yandry had RBI singles, and Nolan Mueller had an RBI sacrifice fly.

Hartford came back with three runs on two walks, a sac bunt, a hit batter, RBI groundout, RBI single and an error.

Yandry went three innings, allowing one run on two hits. Beau Fleischmann pitched two innings, allowing one run. Deal got out of a jam in the sixth and was pulled in the seventh. Schmit finished up.

Port on April 24 lost to Whitefish Bay, 7-0, behind its ace Jonas Owens. He allowed one hit, whiffed 12 and walked two in 6-1/3 innings.

Port (5-9) plays West Bend West on Thursday, hosts Homestead on Monday and plays at Homestead on Wednesday.

Ozaukee on April 23 lost at Manitowoc Lutheran, 14-2, and last Thursday lost at Hilbert/Stockbridge, 6-3.

The Warriors walked 20 against Lutheran. Noah Miller had two hits, including a double. Logan Bell had two RBI.

Against Hilbert/Stockbridge, Miller went five innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits, whiffing 11 and walking two.

In the sixth, Brent Hoffmann allowed two runs on two hits, whiffing two and walking one.

Jacob Eibs had two hits and an RBI. Miller had a double.

Ozaukee plays Oostburg on Thursday, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah on Friday, against Kewaskum and Sheboygan Falls on Saturday in Kewaskum and at Kohler/Sheboygan Christian on Tuesday, May 7.

Grafton has lost four in a row to slip to 7-5. The Black Hawks lost to Slinger last Friday, 8-5 and 11-7; to Nicolet, 7-1, on April 24; and to Hartford, 7-6, on April 23.

Grafton plays at Homestead on Thursday, at West Bend East on Monday and hosts East on Wednesday.
