John ‘Papa John’ Crowley

When John Joseph Crowley opened John’s Pizzaria in downtown Port Washington in 1976, people asked him why he decided to open a pizza joint.
His standard reply — “People will always eat pizza, in good times and bad.”
Mr. Crowley, who was better known as Papa John, loved bartending at the restaurant, keeping people entertained and welcoming them to his eatery and the city he loved.
Mr. Crowley died at his home in Fort Myers, Fla., on June 6, 2021. He was 90.
Mr. Crowley was born in Milwaukee on Feb. 19, 1931, to Jay and Constance (Mueller) Crowley.
He married Louise Hoffing, the love of his life, and after the couple drove through Port Washington they decided to make it their home.
He was a devout Catholic and a proud veteran.
Mr. Crowley was a great basketball, pool, and card player, swimmer and golfer. He was president of the men’s golf league for many years and had six holes in ones.
He loved to tell jokes and was good at it, and he loved to watch movies and sports, especially the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Bucks.
He loved his family, his restaurant family and his many friends, and he especially loved to watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. He also had an eye for interior decorating.
Mr. Crowley is survived by his wife Louise, his children Katie (Gary) Parchim, Michael (Julie) Crowley, Karen (Pat) Stoffel and Brian (Amy) Crowley and his stepchildren Bill Hoffing, Ellen (Rick) Chrzan, Susan Hornby.
He is further survived by his grandchildren Kelly (DJ), Josh (Chloe), Kaela, Chris (Jennifer), Amanda (Joe), Kyle (Jackie), Joe (Liz), Ella, Tommy, Danielle, James, Alexandria (Tyler), Phillip, Adam (Jill), David, Leda, Michael, Crysta and Eric; great-grandchildren Brady, Rylie, Evan, Turner, Logan, Christopher Jr., Leah, Juliana, Anya, Aiden, Sadie and Finn and brothers Dennis (Marianne) Crowley and Jay (MaryAnn) Crowley.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Betty (Bob) Phillip, Mary Jane ( Richard) Frodl and Canstance (Frank) Barbera.
Don’t forget to floss!
In accordance with Mr. Crowley and his wife’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.
