It was an up-down-down week for Warrior girls

The Ozaukee High School girls’ basketball team fell to 3-4 after losing two of three games last week.

The Warriors defeated Sheboygan Christian, 79-34, Nov. 29, to even their Big East Conference record at 1-1 before dropping a pair of games.

Last Thursday, Ozaukee was defeated by St. Mary Catholic, 78-61, in a conference match-up. Statistics were not available.

On Friday, the Warriors dropped a nonconference contest to Oakfield, 67-57.

The game against visiting Sheboygan Christian was a welcome match-up for the Warriors, who earned the easy win.

“It was a game that we were able to mix it up offensively with different schemes,” Ozaukee coach Jason Pollard said.  

“Nearly everyone scored for our team. It was certainly one of our better shooting games all around this season and hopefully built some confidence for our team going forward.”

Ozaukee was led by Gabby Klas with 26 points. After last week’s games, Klas is just 19 points away from scoring 1,000 career points. However, Pollard said, she is hampered by an injury and has missed time since the Christian game. It is unknown when she will be able to eclipse that mark.

Natalie Miller scored 12 points against the Eagles. Mary Shininger had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Sophie Uhlenberg led Ozaukee’s rebounders with nine. Evie Geis added eight rebounds and Caitlyn Weyker made five steals.  

When the Warriors traveled to Oakfield Friday, they had four players score at least nine points, led by Uhlenberg with 13.

Klas, who led the conference in scoring last season, did not play.

“Our team battled in the second half and outplayed Oakfield in that half as our team has done many times this year so far,” Pollard said.

“Sophie, Nicole, Caitlyn and Natalie played very well for us offensively and in rebounding.”

The Oaks led, 38-20, at halftime.

“We made some turnovers and were not able to dig out of the first-half deficit,” Pollard said.

“We battled back to make it an interesting game (down by three with about 90 seconds left), but fell short at the end.”

Weyker scored 11 points and had five steals. Miller and Nicole Liermann each scored nine points.  

Miller added 10 rebounds and four assists, and Liermann grabbed eight rebounds.

The Warriors were to play at Mishicot Tuesday. On Friday, they play at Sheboygan Lutheran and on Tuesday, Dec. 14, they host Kohler.
