The Ozaukee High School girls’ basketball team is hot, and the Warriors weren’t going to let a rival cool them off last Friday.

Ozaukee topped Cedar Grove-Belgium, 51-46, for its 10th straight victory.

After taking a 34-23 halftime lead, the edge got down to three points in the second half. The Rockets had the ball and a chance to tie with a few minutes to play, but the Warriors forced a turnover and got a layup.

From there, they hung on.

Warrior star Becca Schauer had 18 points and 12 steals, four assists and four rebounds. It was her second straight game with double-digit swipes.

Gabby Klas added 11 points, going 3-for-8 on three-pointers. Cami Miller had eight rebounds.

For the Rockets, Alyssa Mentink scored 11 points and Amy TenHaken and Maddie Sutryk each had 10.

“We played good defense through the whole game. We had a couple little breakdowns but for the most part played really well,” Ozaukee coach Tim Wolff said.
Cedar Grove-Belgium coach Jason Jones said, “The girls really played well. Ozaukee’s a tough team. I was proud of our girls for fighting in that game and playing hard.”

Jones said Shelby Cooney played a solid game defensively with three steals that sparked the Rockets’ offense.

Facing Schauer, he said, is a challenge.

“She can change things in a hurry. She’s very quick and hustles very hard. She really earns her points,” Jones said.

The Warriors on Jan. 21 overcame shaky shooting to beat Sheboygan Lutheran, 49-28.

They shot 5-for-27 on three-pointers but got solid play from their bench.

“I thought that the girls who came in off the bench provided a spark, especially Mallory Miller, Sophie Uhlenberg and Emma Poeschl,” Wolff said.

Schauer had 16 points, 11 steals, eight rebounds and six assists. Gabby Klas had eight points, Uhlenberg scored seven and Poeschl had six. Miller had six rebounds.

Lutheran’s two leading scorers had six points each.

Ozaukee, 10-3 and behind Oostburg’s 10-2 in the Big East Conference, play at Random Lake (7-5) on Thursday and host nonconference foe Lomira (3-13) on Monday.

The Rockets on Jan. 21 lost to Oostburg, 56-29.

They were down, 21-12, at halftime.

“We were hoping to stick with them a little bit and we kind of did that in the first half,” Jones said.

In the second half, the Flying Dutch turned up the pressure.

Rocket Ellie Dirkse scored seven points.

Kelsie Dulmes scored 16 for Oostburg. Alex Voskuil had 13 and Emily DeMaster had 10.

The Rockets, 5-7 in the Big East, host Sheboygan Lutheran (0-13) on Thursday and play at Reedsville (3-9) on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
