Holland Fest to celebrate Dutch heritage this weekend

Cedar Grove’s Holland Fest this weekend is going to be a little different this year due to road construction.

People cannot access the fest from the north on Highway 32 and are advised to take alternate routes.

Most of the rest of the fest will carry on as usual, aside from the kids’ tent, kettle corn and library book sale. Those may return in the future.

But everything else to celebrate Dutch heritage is back — wooden shoes, oliebollen (round fried doughnuts), woosterbrooje (pigs in a blanket) and klompen dancing are all on the docket for the Friday, July 25, through Sunday, July 27, fest. Events include:

Friday, July 25

• 3 p.m. — Street scrubbing, klompen dancing and wooden shoe races for people from age 3 to 85 on Van Altena Avenue between Main Street and First Street.

• 3 to 5:30 p.m. — Klompenhouwer Luke Traver will do wooden shoe carving demonstrations.

• 4 to 5:30 p.m. — Cloud 9 Entertainment will perform acrobatics and more.

• 3 to 6 p.m. — The Het Museum and Te Ronde House will be open.

• 3 to 8 p.m. — A bounce house in the park will be open. The cost is $15 for the day or $30 for a weekend pass.

• Souvenir and food stands will offer items and food and drinks for purchase throughout the day.

• 3 to 8 p.m. ­— Raffle tickets will be for sale at the bandstand, $2 each or three for $5.

• 5:30 to 9 p.m. — The five-piece Our House Band will perform 1960s and 1970s music.

• 9:15 p.m. — The final raffle prize drawing will be held. Seven prizes are available with first prize being $1,000.

Saturday, July 26

• 6 to 7 a.m. — Registration for the two-mile run/walk and 10-kilometer walk will be held in Independence Park at the corner of Third Street and Ramaker Avenue.

• 7:30 a.m. — The run and walk starts.

• 8 a.m. to noon — Registration for the car, truck and motorcycle show on the Cedar Grove Library lawn for $5 per vehicle.

• 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. — The show is open on the lawn. Prizes are awarded at 1 p.m.

• 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — The Holland Fest Craft Fair on the front lawn of the library features more than 60 crafters from across the Midwest.

• 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. — A bounce house in the park will be open. The cost is $25 for the day.

• 10 and 11 a.m., noon, and 4, 5 and 6 p.m. — Scenic “misguided” free trolley tours will be hosted by village historian Richard Dykstra. 

• 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. — Klompenhouwer Luke Traver will do wooden shoe carving demonstrations.

• 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. — The Het Museum and Te Ronde House will be open.

• 1 p.m. — Street scrubbing and klompen dancing will precede the annual parade.

• 3 to 8 p.m. — Raffle tickets will be for sale at the bandstand, $2 each or three for $5.

• Souvenir and food stands will offer items and food and drinks for purchase throughout the day, and a souvenir shop will be held in the park.

Entertainment at the bandstand

• 11 a.m. — Fashions of Holland will be shown and the Stage Dancers will perform.

• After the parade, the Sheboygan North High School Drum Line will perform.

• 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. — The Goodtime Dutchmen will perform polka music.

• 6 to 9 p.m. — The country rock band Crossfire will perform.

• 9:15 p.m. — The final raffle and grand prize drawing will be held. Seven prizes are available with first prize being $1,000.

Sunday, July 27

• 6 p.m. — A worship service in the park will be held.
