Hikes, programs are scheduled at Riveredge

A variety of hikes and programs are being offered at Riveredge Nature Center in the Town of Saukville.

The Trails Aglow Friday night hikes are offered from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 23 and 30 and Feb. 6 and 13.

Participants may hike, snowshoe or ski  over luminary-lit trails and experience the winter landscape beneath the moon.

The theme for Jan 23 is a stargazing scavenger hunt; Jan. 30 is wellness in nature, Feb. 6 is game night and Feb. 13 is Valentine’s night.

The program is free, but participants are asked to register in advance.

A free family nature club meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Glacial Blue Hills in West Bend.

The event will feature educational activities and games, plus time to explore the native hardwood forest and a segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Those attending should meet at the Ice Age Trailhead on Beaver Dam Road.

The free program, open to families with children from birth to age 18, is free but advance registration is requested.

“Invasive Plant ID & Property Assessment: Know Your Enemy!” will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20.

The class will train participants to identify “top tier” invasive threats, from woody invasive species such as buckthorn, honeysuckle, barberry and autumn olive, to herbaceous species like garlic mustard, dame’s rocket, celindine and burdock.

The session, which will also include a discussion on how these plants prevail and how to think like an ecologist, will allow participants to develop a strategic triage approach to map their own properties.

The program, open to people ages 18 and older, is $40 for Riveredge members and $50 for nonmembers.

A free winter adventure and exploration day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7.

Participants will explore the Riveredge landscape through self-guided and educator-led activities, such as boot hockey, broom ball, geocaching and the history of cross-country skiing at Riveredge.

If conditions allow, snowshoes will be available to check out.

Advance registration is suggested.

Riveredge is at 4458 Hwy. Y.
