Grafton High School senior Brock Heffner posted his first double-double of the season and the Black Hawks boys’ basketball team used a big first half to beat Hartford, 70-61, on Dec. 15.

Coach Damon James said he would like to see his team play well in both halves.

The Hawks held a 36-26 lead at the break, especially playing well on defense, James said, but had built up a 14-point lead in the first 18 minutes “and had opportunities to blow the thing open.”

But the Hawks started slowly in the second half, and Hartford’s 6 feet, 4 inch senior Jadon Melvin got into a rhythm.

The Hawks’ lead was cut to four before they turned it around. The Orioles were forced to foul and the Hawks went 19-for-27 at the free throw line.

“Obviously, you want to shoot a little higher (percentage) than that,” James said.

“Give Hartford credit. They’re still going to fight.”

Heffner, 6-7, who has committed to playing at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, scored 25 points on 8-for-11 shooting, made two of three three-pointers and grabbed 11 rebounds.

“That’s his first double-double,” James said. “That should be his normal, It’s lofty expectations but it’s nothing unrealistic.”

A few other players also drew praise from James.

Forward J.P. Benzschawel scored 13 points. Senior guard Tyler Tsui scored 11 points, including going 4-for-4 on free throws, and freshman guard Michael McNabb Jr. scored 10, making six of seven free throws.

Melvin scored a game-high 27 points, going 12-for-15 from the field. Caleb Much scored 14 points.

The Hawks’ game against Port Washington last Friday was rescheduled to Saturday, Jan. 9, due to contact tracing issues with the Pirates.

The Hawks, 3-2 in the North Shore Conference and overall, were scheduled to play at Slinger (3-3 NSC) on Tuesday before winter break. They host Slinger on Tuesday, Jan. 5. Two games in Kenosha over break were canceled.

“We’re going to continue to practice and do what we do,” James said.

Port boys looking for first victory

Port (0-5) lost at Cedarburg, 72-34, on Dec. 15. Nick Burmesch scored a game-high 22 points for the Pirates and Ryan Burmesch had eight.

Logan Landers led the Bulldogs with 18 points.

Port’s next conference game is Tuesday, Jan. 5, at Homestead.
