Grant to bring more birdhouses to Tendick

Tendick Nature Park in the Town of Saukville will become even more welcoming to birds with the help of a $500 grant received by the Ozaukee County Planning and Parks Department.

The funds from Bird City Wisconsin will be used to help install 10 to 15 bluebird boxes at Tendick, as well as six birdhouses at Virmond County Park in Mequon.

“The grant matches nicely with restoration work we’re doing at those two parks,” Planning and Parks Director Andrew Struck told the county Natural Resources Committee last week.

Ozaukee County has been engaged in prairie and wetlands restoration work at Tendick Park being paid for by grants from Ducks Unlimited, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the American Transmission Co. Tree Planting Grant Program.

About 40 acres have been restored. The 125-acre park includes a disc golf course and boat and kayak launch.

As a result, the county has documented about 70 new species of native flowers and grasses at Tendick, plus many species of birds and insects.
