Grafton tops Port, struggles in NSC relays

Small swim teams find it hard to compete in league

The Grafton High School boys’ swim team scored 36 points and tied for sixth out of eight North Shore Conference competitors at the league’s relays on Dec. 15 at Port Washington.

Among the highest finishers for the Black Hawks was the 400-yard freestyle relay team. Jackson King, Tristan Sohr, Ian Konzen and Todd O’Connor were fifth in 4 minutes. 10.69 seconds.

The 400 medley relay team of Dawson Memmel, Andrew Slagter, Braedyn King and Luke Kempka was fifth in 5:08.55.

Caden Starr was last of three divers with 141.95 points.

The 300 backstroke relay of Lance Greicar, Austin Belfor-Eichhorn, Ian Mitchell and Jackson King was seventh in 3:50.79.

The Hawks tied Hartford/Slinger with 36 points.

Port scored 11 points.

The Pirates’ 100 medley of Ben Falkenberg, Tim Zeien, Maksym Kasiyanchuk and Jack Sickles took fifth in a personal-record 1:06.64.

The 100 freestyle relay of Zeien, Falkenberg, Dagan Daniels and Sickles was fifth in a personal-record of 54.77 seconds.

The 300 backstroke relay of Falkenberg, Zeien, Kasiyanchuk and Sickles was sixth in a personal-record 3:46.26.

The meet was split into two halves due to Covid-19. Whitefish Bay hosted the other half and won the meet with 96 points.

On Dec. 8, Grafton beat Port, 110-29, in a dual at Port.

The Black Hawks won every event.

O’Connor won the 100 freestyle in 55.51 seconds and the 200 freestyle in 2:06.29.

Slagter won the 200 individual medley in 2:31.33 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.89.

Greicar won the 100 backstroke in 1:12.82.

The 200 medley relay of Greicar, Slagter, Jackson King and Braedyn King won in 2:07.32.

The 200 freestyle relay of Greicar, Slagter, Chase Mueller and O’Connor won in 1:50.08.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Braedyn King, Jackson King, Greicar and O’Connor won in 4:09.64.

Port’s Jack Sickles was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:14.12 and in the 100 freestyle in 59.19.

Finn Ritter was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:32.8.

The Hawks host the West Bend Co-op on Tuesday, Jan. 5, Hartford on Thursday, Jan. 7, and swim in the Bulldog Invite in Cedarburg on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Port swims at Hartford on Tuesday, hosts Cedarburg on Thursday, Jan. 7 and swims in the Bulldog Invite on Saturday, Jan. 9.
