The Grafton Gladiators youth football program has a new practice field.

The Town of Grafton Plan Commission on Wednesday, May 1, unanimously approved a conditional-use permit for the Gladiators to practice on the Zaun Soccer Fields on River Bend Road.

The Gladiators needed a new practice field since their previous site at Kennedy Elementary School became an addition to the school as part of the Grafton School District’s $39.9 million facilities project.

Last season, the Gladiators practiced at Centennial Park.

The Gladiators will use the Zaun fields from 4:30 to 8 p.m. weekdays from Aug. 1 to Nov. 10. In August, there will be one Saturday practice from 8 a.m. to noon and one multi-team practice.

The football program plans to install a 30-by-64-foot shed on the west side of the park that will be used for storage and film review. Two goal posts will be added and an existing well will be expanded.

If there are enough funds available, an irrigation system will be installed.

During the meeting, a couple of neighboring residents expressed their concerns about the use of the field because of lighting, noise, parking and litter.

The commission added conditions to ease the residents’ concerns. Only four stadium lights will be allowed that will project in the north and northwest direction away from the neighbors. Amplified noise, such as air horns and mega phones, is prohibited.

If there is a large event, plans must be submitted to the town and Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office for approval.

The conditional-use permit was originally proposed to be renewed in 2021, but the commission decided to have the permit revisited after one year.

The property is owned by the Grafton School District and leased to Fusion Soccer Club, which supports the Gladiators use of the field.

The Gladiators’ home games will be played at Grafton High School.

About 120 players are in the program.
