GHS grads top state ACT average
Grafton High School’s 2018 graduates scored above the state average on the ACT college entrance exam, according to results released last week.
The composite 2018 ACT average for class members was 22.9, up slightly from 22.4 when they took the test as juniors in 2017. The composite average for Wisconsin public school seniors was 20.5.
Grafton High School was also higher than Wisconsin’s public school averages in all four individual subject categories used to determine the composite score.
Grafton’s average score for English was 22.8 (state average 19.8); 22.2 (20.3) in math; 23.1 (20.6) in reading; and 22.9 (20.8) in science.
The ACT is a group of curriculum-based achievement exams designed to measure the academic skills taught in schools and considered important for success in first-year college courses. Scores range from a low of 1 to a high of 36.
Out of the 169 Grafton students who took the ACT, 72 took the test multiple times. For those who retook the ACT, 52 had an increase in their score, eight saw no change and 12 decreased.
The future is also looking bright for the Class of 2019, whose composite score of 21.8 is in the top 8% of Wisconsin high schools.
“This is a true testament to our teachers and staff at all of our schools and grade levels,” Grafton High School Principal Scott Mantei said. “There’s a lot of points of pride with these numbers across the board.”
