Gertrude Zernikel

Mrs. Gertrud Zernikel of Port Washington, formerly of New Berlin, passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2022, at Lawlis Family Hospice in Mequon. She was 89 years old.

Gertrud was born in Limburg, Germany, on April 5, 1933.

On Aug. 25, 1956, she married Viktor Zernikel in Limburg.

The couple immigrated to the United States in November 1962 and settled in Milwaukee. Viktor and Gertrud later moved to New Berlin to raise their young family.

She enjoyed and took great pride in her yardwork, knitting, crocheting and cooking and baking German meals.

Gertrud is survived by her son Dieter (Debra Oberlin) of Saukville and her four grandchildren, Kathryn, Matthew, Christopher, and Jacob.  She is further survived by her four great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Gertrud was preceded in death by her husband Viktor and her two sons, Dr. Reiner Zernikel and Michael Zernikel.

Visitation for Gertrud will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Eernisse Funeral Home, 1600 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington.

She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Good Hope Cemetery in Greenfield.
