The Ozaukee High School girls’ basketball team hadn’t beaten Cedar Grove-Belgium in three years, and the streak nearly continued last Thursday.

The Warriors saw a 19-point lead early in the second half evaporate into a one to two-point deficit late in the game.

Down, 62-60, with 13.4 seconds to play, Ozaukee had the ball and a chance to tie or win. But the Rockets forced a jump ball and had the possession arrow. All they had to do was inbound the ball with 6.6 seconds left.

Then Ozaukee’s Kenedeigh Harness, playing with four fouls, stole an inbounds pass under the Rockets’ basket and hit the game-tying layup in the final seconds.

Harness said she knew she had to find a way to tie the game.

“It was just like, go get this ball and make this shot. We’ve got to keep going and we’ve got to win this game,” she said. “Sometimes you just have to go, not think and just do.”

In overtime, Ozaukee got back to what gave it a 32-16 halftime lead, and won 78-64.

Savannah Quade had seven points in the overtime, going 4-for-4 on free throws and draining a three-pointer.

The Warriors shot 29-for-43 on free throws, and the Rockets went 16-for-31 as the teams combined for 60 fouls. Three Rockets’ starters and two Warriors’ starters fouled out.

“We played a great first half, and in the second half the foul count went the other way,” Ozaukee coach Linda Weyker said. “We came back in the overtime and played our game again. We got back to passing the ball around and settling for the best shot, not just anything.”

Ozaukee sophomore Mya Schroeder scored 25 points on 7-for-14 shooting, including going 11-for-17 on free throws. She also had five steals, six rebounds and three assists. Quade had 21 points on 7-for-14 shooting. Chloe Dybul had eight points, six rebounds and five assists. Bianca Marini had four points, seven rebounds and six assists. Harness had 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

“Mya is doing an amazing job as a sophomore just taking the ball and taking control, but at the same time there are so many girls working so hard and playing as a team,” Weyker said. “Savannah had some key shots. Chloe again played another amazing defensive game.”

Dybul said Harness’ shot electrified a team in need of a spark.

“I think that just brought our energy through the roof. In the overtime, we just dominated,” she said. “It just proves we can do it. If we’re in these situations, we have the people, we have the skill. We just need to work tougher as a team. Each person has to do their job.

For the Rockets, Laila Arrowood scored 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including 4-for-7 on three-pointers. Two came late in the game that tied the score at 57. Gracie Schmidt had 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals.  Kami Horn had 12 points. Arden Getschman had six points and eight rebounds.

“We knew what we had to do. It was just a matter of sticking to our game plan, and we got reminded of what that game plan was at halftime,” Schmidt said of climbing out of the 16-point halftime hole.

“Gracie did great,” Rockets’ coach Nicole Depies said. “Laila Arrowood stepped up big for us in this game. Kami Horn hit some good shots for us in the second half. They fought back in the second half. But our biggest hurdle is figuring out how to play two halves.”

It was rivalry week for the Warriors as they won at Random Lake, 61-41, on Dec. 8. The Warriors had beaten the Rams once in the past three seasons.

Ozaukee led, 38-26, at halftime, and didn’t let go.

Schroeder had 21 points on 9-for-18 shooting, and seven rebounds. Marini had 13 points, five rebounds and four steals. Dybul had 11 points. Harness had eight points and seven rebounds.

Lexi Gruman led the Rams with 17 points, nine steals and six rebounds. Alivia Stefanich had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Ozaukee, 5-3, played defending state champion Oostburg on Monday. The Warriors play at Howards Grove on Friday, Dec. 19.

The Rockets lost at Oostburg, 66-19, on Dec. 8. Arrowood had six points. Schmidt had four points and six rebounds.

Kinsley Ketterhagen scored 18 points for Oostburg. Ady Ketterhagen had 13 and Soraya Benton had 11.

The Rockets, 0-7, were to play at Random Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 16. They play at Kewaskum on Thursday, Dec. 18, and host Plymouth on Tuesday, Dec. 23.
