Flying buzz saw headed to Saukville
Saukville residents should soon be able to see something unusual in the skies over their community. American Transmission Co. has hired Aerial Solutions to manage vegetation growth in transmission line corridors by using an airborne power saw with rotary blades. During the process, the saw is suspended from a helicopter on a 90-foot vertical boom. Above, the helicopter and saw were visible during cutting operations in Random Lake this week. Ben Gura, American Transmission’s vegetation management specialist, said his company is using the aerial saw to trim trees near transmission lines from Saukville to Forest Junction through early March. “The aerial saw takes just a few hours to complete what typically takes ground crews several days to accomplish,” Gura said. However, because the aerial process is weather dependent, trimming operations could take additional time to complete, he noted. Photos by Sam Arendt
