Fishing club gears up for annual derby
The Great Lakes Sport Fishermen’s Ozaukee Chapter plans to hold its annual public fishing derby as scheduled from June 26 to 28 in Port Washington.
The event is one of the club’s two annual fundraisers.
Some of the fish were released in the marina last month, according to the club’s newsletter.
On March 23, 14,007 seeforellen brown trout were released. On March 24, 44,750 coho salmon and 17,008 seeforellen brown trout were let go. On March 25, 6,926 seeforellen brown trout were released for a total of 37,941.
The fish were held in net pens and released after dark to avoid predators.
Rainbow trout and chinook salmon will be added later. The chinooks will be held in net pens for as long as three weeks while being fed and monitored daily before they are released. That allows the chinooks to grow and imprint on the lake so they will return during spawning time.
All three of the club’s net pens, including its newest one built by Rogue Precision Group, will be used for the chinooks. PVC tubes donated by Albiero Plumbing will be used to keep the pens floating in the water.
In other news, the club will pay for four students to attend Outdoor Leaders Camp from Aug. 2 to 7 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Central Wisconsin Environmental Station in Amherst Junction. The camp is on the shores of Sunset Lake.
The workshop is for students ages 16 to 18 who want to pursue careers in the outdoors.
The club wants to support students from Ozaukee and Washington counties. The cost is $385 per student.
Applications are due May 1.
