Fear the fawn

Of the elements that delay a high school football game, I’m guessing a deer ranks pretty low.

I don’t know if it has ever happened in Port Washington before, but you can now check that off the Pirates’ bucket list.

Before the start of the second half last Friday vs. Pewaukee — which proved to be the lesser of the Pirate teams that evening — a fawn managed to dart onto Al Urness Field and nervously gallop around for a couple of hilarious minutes.

Teams stood on the field waiting to execute the kickoff as the creature quickly explored her surroundings.

Video evidence shows the fawn bouncing around behind the end zone near the parking lot entrance as everyone watched.

 A Pewaukee fan sort of herded the doe back out of the stadium, so I’m told. I unfortunately did not witness the incident firsthand as I was in Grafton, where Black Hawks and Bulldogs showed but no actual animals.

I understand the fawn did not pay admission to the game or taste the rainbow, despite the regular advice to buy Skittles from legendary Port football public address announcer Jeff Morgan. Well, doe is me.

I saw on expert Lester Mayer’s thorough stat sheet that Port’s Matt Esselmann had a 73-yard punt. Coach John Bunyan said it took a couple of bounces on the two-year-old turf field. I would hope so. The field is only 100 yards long.

What’s he using? Flubber?

Port has another attractive attribute so far this season. The Pirates haven’t lost a fumble or thrown an interception in either game. Bunyan said “knock on wood” and didn’t want to talk about it for the obvious fear of the jinx, but I can talk about it because everyone knows it doesn’t count if it’s in a column and not the game story.

I did see a couple of unique plays in Grafton. In the fourth quarter, Hawk  quarterback Vince Cameranesi voraciously scrambled right, then left, then forward — kinda like that fawn from the video I’ve seen — before launching an accurate pass to Jaeden Tiegs for a 32-yard score.

The Bulldogs tried an onside kick in the third quarter but booted it to the wrong guy. The ball skipped right to Carson Faust, who played a sharp third base for the Hawks last season. He snagged the ball just like a hard bouncer at the hot corner.

Port tennis coach Melonie Zielinski said a quadrangular meet at Mukwonago was shortened due to more than 100-degree heat on the court. Sheesh!
