Farewell to long-empty grocery building

Crews began razing the former grocery store in the Port Harbor Center this week, with one machine moving scrap metal to the side while another worked to take down the facade on Tuesday. The demolition was prompted by a repair-or-raze order issued by Port Washington Building Inspector Gary Peterson, who deemed the building unsafe, after owners Jim Vollmar and Don Voigt and their wives postponed plans to convert the property at the north end of the strip mall to condominiums for at least a year.
