Drones to take flight as part of library’s virtual-reality program

Drones will soon be flying over the Grafton Public Library, thanks to a new virtual-reality and computer-coding initiative.

The Joint Library Board on Monday, Feb. 24, approved purchasing two drones and Google Chromebook laptops to operate the drones. The equipment costs $900, which will be covered by the Grafton Library Donor Fund. 

Library Director John Hanson said he would eventually like to have four drones to be flown at Kennedy Elementary School’s parking lot.

The drones will be used to educate users about virtual reality and teach computer coding skills, he said.

“We thought it would be a good way to introduce technology for our customers,” Hanson said, noting the drones are easy to fly and come equipped with a built-in camera and virtual-reality headsets. 

Hanson said there will be a three-part class beginning this summer that will introduce people to coding by setting up flight patterns. 

“We know there is an interest in the community to learn about flying drones and also understanding the coding process,” he said. 

The library’s technology club disbanded last year, but Hanson said former members are still interested in learning about new technology.

Hanson said the classes are free and open to non-Grafton residents. 

“I think this will be good for all ages, not just young adults,” Hanson said.

“We’ve already heard a lot of interest. We are really excited about this opportunity because this can help bring more people to our library.”
