Dorothy Candlish

Just a few weeks before Dorothy P. Candlish died in her sleep at her Grafton home on Wednesday, May 15, her family celebrated her 90th birthday in Door County, a tradition for the past five decades.
Mrs. Candlish was born in Milwaukee on April 29, 1929, to Frank and Helen Kulka Kaczmarek.
She was raised by her mother and grandparents on the family farm in Ogema. When her mother remarried a few years later, she moved back to Milwaukee.
In 1950, she married Joseph Klisch and the couple ran the Nightingale tavern in Perkinstown for a few years. The couple returned to the Milwaukee area for Mr. Klisch’s business, American Metal Spinning, and lived in Brown Deer with their three children.
After Mr. Klisch died in 1972, she went to work at Relocation Realty and later at Coldwell Banker. When her sons started Lakefront Brewery in 1987, Mrs. Candlish gave them a helping hand with bookkeeping and assorted chores around the brewery.
In 1981, she married Bob Candlish. They resided in Fond du Lac and later in Grafton. Mr. Candlish died in 1996.
Her family said she lived a life of independence, self-determination and self-reliance. She treasured growing up on her grandparents’ farm in Ogema and the simple and hardworking life there. In 2018, she was able to show her grandchildren her childhood farm on Spokes Hill, where she relived her childhood memories.
Mrs. Candlish enjoyed political talk shows, especially ones on MSNBC.
Mrs. Candlish is survived by her children James (Joan) Klisch of Milwaukee, Cheryl (Rick) Zimmermann of Jackson and Russell (May) Klisch of Shorewood; grandchildren Rick Jr. (Patti), Steve (Jenna), Victoria and Jacqueline; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Joe Klisch and Bob Candlish.
A funeral service was held Monday, May 20, at Mueller Funeral Home in Cedarburg.
Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorials to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association are suggested.
