Doris I. Schmidt

Doris Irene (Schwengel) Schmidt, age 71, danced into Jesus’ arms on April 12, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.
Doris was born on Oct. 25, 1949, in Port Washington, Wis., to Roland and Delores Schwengel.
She became a child of God through baptism on Nov. 13, 1949, and was confirmed in the faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Grafton, Wis., on April 7, 1963.
Doris met the love of her life David Schmidt through her brother Ronnie Schwengel. Doris and Dave’s friendship grew with the help of her sister Dorothy Parchim and her husband by joining a couple’s bowling league.
Doris and Dave’s friendship blossomed into romance at the 1980 Milwaukee Brewers home opener. Sixto Lezcano hit a walk-off grand slam home run in the bottom of the ninth to win the game and Dave kissed Doris. How about that one folks?!
Doris and Dave were married shortly thereafter at St. Paul Lutheran Church on March 7, 1981. Her life was further blessed with the birth of her daughters, Erin and Katherine. Doris’ family continued to be a great joy in her life.
Doris’ greatest joy was being a child of God. She showed her love of Jesus by caring for children and families as the secretary at St. Paul Lutheran School in Grafton, Wis. She also praised the Lord as the church organist of Pilgrim United Church of Christ and St. Paul.
She was a lifelong baseball fan and enjoyed listening to or watching Milwaukee Braves and Brewers games. Doris also loved to dance a good polka, especially one played by her husband Dave. She always enjoyed sewing with the Cloverleaf 4-H Club children and crafting with friends, most recently scrapbooking her life’s memories and making cards.
Doris was preceded in heavenly rest by her nephew Matthew Schumann, brother Ronnie Schwengel, parents Roland and Delores Schwengel and father and mother-in-law Bud and Bea Schmidt.
She is survived by her loving husband Dave and her daughters Erin and Katherine. She is further survived by her sister Dorothy (Ronald) Parchim, brother-in-law Daniel (Donna) Schmidt, sister-in-law Diane (Andrew) Schumann, nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces and her close church family.
Dave, Erin and Katherine offer their heartfelt thanks and God’s richest blessings to the ICU staff at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Ozaukee for caring for their beloved wife and mom, Doris.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 701 Washington St., Grafton. Interment was at the church cemetery.
Visitation was held at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Paul Lutheran church or school are appreciated.
