DNR adjusting practices
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources had planned to use three net pens this spring from the Ozaukee Chapter of the Great Lakes Sport Fishermen Club in preparation for the annual fishing derby.
The DNR would hold chinook salmon in the pens and feed them for three weeks before releasing them into the lake.
Ozaukee Chapter President Robert Hammen said due to the coronavirus and concerns over people not staying a safe distance from each other, the DNR was going to release the salmon into Lake Michigan instead.
The chapter’s derby is slated to be held June 26 to 28 in Port Washington.
Besides chinook salmon, participants will try to catch seeforellen brown trout, coho salmon and rainbow trout.
Last month, more than 80,000 coho salmon and seeforellen brown trout were held in pens, then released into the lake.
