Costume designer is artist of the month

Costume designer and painter Victoria Berdichevsky is the September artist in residence at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.

Berdichevsky will demonstrate her work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 5, 6, 19, 20 and 26. 

She will also lead a workshop, “Watercolors: Sartorial Splendors,” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The workshop is intended for advanced beginner and intermediate students and will guide participants in creating unique, carefully crafted and elaborately detailed artwork. 

Students will explore artistic techniques including composition, proportion and color theory while learning to create paintings inspired by the sartorial splendors of various historical periods and cultures.

Using watercolors and gouache on watercolor paper, participants will learn and practice a variety of painting techniques. 

The registration fee of $58 for center members and $70 for nonmembers includes all supplies.

A classically trained visual artist, Berdichevsky specializes in costume design for theatre and ballet, figure drawing and landscapes. 

Her extensive background in set and costume design for theatre and film deeply informs her work. Costumes, architectural styles and the material culture of various historical periods and societies provide an endless source of inspiration, enriching the narratives within her paintings.

Berdichevsky is the third generation in her family to pursue art professionally. Born in Moscow, Russia, she graduated from the renowned Surikov College of Fine Arts before earning a master’s degree in stage and costume design from the Moscow Art Theatre School. 

In 1988, she moved to Toronto, Canada, where she worked as an artist with Anna Art Publishing. In 2022, she relocated to Slinger to be closer to her family.
