Company cancels practice burn of house
A fire that was supposed to happen this past weekend didn’t when Casey’s General Store officials canceled a practice fire the Fredonia Fire Department expected to conduct at a house where a new Casey’s gas station and convenience store is scheduled to be built.
The fire department had been told it would be able to conduct the exercise as soon as We Energies could remove a gas meter from a building that once housed an antiques store at the corner of Martin Drive and Highway 57.
While it waited, the department had been able to practice controlled burns in some rooms of the house.
The meter was scheduled to be removed last Friday, which it was, and the department was set to set fire to the building Saturday.
But late last week the department was informed that Casey’s has a corporate no-burn policy, torpedoing that plan.
