Chickens keep popping up in village

The Village of Belgium discussed but did not adopt an ordinance to allow chickens in the past couple of years, but Village Marshal Leon Anzia keeps finding them.

“I got a call from somebody for chickens. I had to go over and talk to the guy and sure enough, he has chickens. He was going to get rid of them,” he told the Village Board on Monday.

Then another case was discovered.

“A week ago, somebody else had chickens and was going to get rid of them,” Anzia said.

“Everybody’s on chicken patrol,” Village President Roseann Geib said.

“Where were these people wanting the chickens when we were doing the chicken debate? None of these people showed up.”

Anzia said he gives residents a week or two to evict their illegal birds.
