CG-Belgium is a soccer Haven
In a rematch of last year’s sectional final between two longtime adjacent rivals, Cedar Grove-Belgium High School edged Oostburg, 2-1, in girls’ soccer last Thursday.
The host Lady Dutch, the defending Big East Conference champions, took the lead early, with T.J. Graves scoring in the 21st minute off a corner kick that bounced around in the box, coach Elias Garza said.
Two Havens handled the scoring from there. Haven Minick tied the game in the 30th minute on a free kick.
“She struck it from about 35 yards out perfectly into the upper left corner,” Garza said.
Shortly after halftime, Haven Lanser netted what would be the game winner in the 47th minute.
“She took a nicely played through ball from Amy TenHaken and shot it with the outside of her right foot past Oostburg’s goalkeeper into the lower right corner,” Garza said.
The score held up during a rainy second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Braga made three saves in the game.
The Rockets outshot the Lady Dutch, 9-7.
“We didn’t create as many scoring opportunities as we would have liked, but we did manage to carve out a few other key chances, including two missed breakaways and striking the crossbar,” Garza said.
The Rockets had an easier time against Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah on April 23, cruising to a 7-1 victory.
Genesis Ciske scored three goals and Madison Bohachek had two. Abby Kraus and Amy TenHaken each had one.
TenHaken had two assists, and Kraus, Ciske, Alex Mentink, Shelby Cooney and Lizzy Luebke each had one.
“We had 51 total shots and probably weren’t as efficient at finding the back of the net as we would’ve liked. However, we still put away seven of our shots and were able to rest a few players while others received more playing time than usual,” Garza said.
The Rockets, 7-1 overall and 4-0 and in first place in the Big East, had their game against Kohler on Tuesday postponed due to rain. They are scheduled to host New Holstein on Thursday and play at Ozaukee on Tuesday, May 7. They host second-place Random Lake (3-1 Big East) on Thursday, May 9.
Ozaukee went to 1-3-3 after two ties and a loss in the past week.
The Warriors tied Sheboygan Lutheran, 1-1, on April 23. Sonnet Bayer tied the game in the first half on an assist from Tammy Landing. Goalkeepers Alyssa Laabs and Ruth Utecht combined for nine saves.
The Warriors outshot their opponents, 21-15, and had seven corner kicks to three for Lutheran.
Last Thursday, the Warriors tied Kohler, 0-0, despite being outshot, 24-14. Goalkeeper Emily Janowski made 16 saves.
Oostburg on Monday used two first-half goals to beat the Warriors, 2-0. All three Ozaukee goalkeepers combined for 18 saves. The Lady Dutch fired 25 shots.
The Warriors, (0-1-2 Big East) were scheduled to play Sheboygan Falls on Tuesday on the turf at Lakeland University due to wet field conditions. They were to host Kiel on Wednesday and play at Roncalli before facing the Rockets next week.
