CG-Belgium, Ozaukee off to strong starts in girls’ soccer

It took six weeks, but the Cedar Grove-Belgium girls finally got their soccer season started last week, and they began with a lopsided win.

The host Rockets knocked off Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, 10-0, on April 24.

Amy TenHaken and Brittany Teunissen each scored three goals. Jessica Rose, Alyssa Mentink, Ellie Felsinger and Madison Bohachek had one goal apiece.

Rose and Haven Lanser each had two assists, and TenHaken, Kelsey Lukens, Payton Navis, Bailey Cooney and Kirstin Oszuscik added one apiece.

“We had a productive evening that would allow us to see many players on the pitch,” Rockets coach Elias Garza said.

“Defensively, we were able to not allow any shots on our goal. It was a total team effort. Every third contributed.”

Two days later, the Rockets forged a scoreless tie against defending Big East Conference champion Oostburg.

It was the first time since 2015 the Rockets earned a tie with the perennial soccer powerhouse. Each team had five shots on goal.

“Girls anticipated and communicated well this evening. It was a tremendous team effort to have been able to shut out Oostburg,” Garza said.

“I’m incredibly proud to have been able to play so well and acquire a good result against the defending conference champs.”

On Monday, the Rockets posted a 4-1 road win over Kohler on a windy night.

After settling for a 1-1 tie at halftime, the Rockets dominated the rest of the way.

Lanser, Rose, TenHaken and Haven Minick tallied goals. Lukens had two assists and Rose had one.

“We made a few halftime adjustments which resulted in improved play for the team. It was truly a great response as the girls would retain possession much better and get more opportunities on goal in the second half,” Garza said.

This week, the Rockets (3-0) are scheduled to play at New Holstein on Thursday and host Sheboygan Lutheran on Saturday. On May 8, they will host Ozaukee.

Ozaukee girls off to strong start

The Ozaukee Warriors’ soccer team tied Kohler, 1-1, on the road Monday in a game they could have won.

With the Warriors leading, 1-0, their goalie went to the ground and covered up the ball. But a Blue Bombers player kicked it out of her hands and scored.

“I think with the positioning of the ref he wasn’t able to see it. It got kind of crowded in the box,” Ozaukee coach Ivan Garcia said.

On another play, the Warriors scored on a breakaway, but a Kohler player who stepped in front of an Ozaukee forward tripped, and officials called a foul that wiped out the goal.

“We could have won that game,” Garcia said. “But we took the tie. Both teams were fighting hard.”

Marta Arroqui scored Ozaukee’s goal in the fifth minute on an assist from Brianna Szczerbinski.

On April 24, the Warriors won, 1-0, at Sheboygan Lutheran.

Mikayla Penkwitz scored in the 45th minute on a corner kick from Abby Miller.

Stopper Loren Miller and sweeper Abby Paulus each played 90 minutes and helped preserve the shutout.

Goalie Emily Janowski made nine saves, including two spectacular ones. Garcia said Janowski has been doing “an awesome job.”

This week, the Warriors (2-1-1) were scheduled to host Sheboygan Falls on Tuesday and Manitowoc Roncalli on Thursday and play at Central Wisconsin Christian on Saturday.

On May 8, Ozaukee will play at Cedar Grove-Belgium.
