CG-Belgium has young kickers, new coach

The Cedar Grove-Belgium High School boys’ soccer team started the season by seeing its former self last Thursday.

The Rockets lost a match against their alumni, 12-2. Even new coach Kyle Schultz, a 2010 grad of the school, played a few minutes.

This year’s Rockets have about 16 players. The offense is expected to be led by forward Caleb Heinen, who had a goal against the alumni, and Logan Navis, who Schultz said had “some good touches and good looks.”

Freshman forward Grayson Prahl also showed sharp play on the attack, Schultz said.

Midfielder Brendan Lambrecht scored the current Rockets’ other goal. He and Jesse Burg are expected to lead the midfield.

Parker Knight was “the best defender of the night” and played goal keeper, Schutlz said. The keeper position is still up for grabs, he said.

The team’s strength last Thursday was stamina.

“They showed a lot of good endurance. I was a little leery after hot practice days. Nobody seemed to be gassed,” Schultz said.

“Their willingness and drive. They didn’t quit. It was great to see.”

Knight, Burg and Navis — all juniors — are the team captains.

Matt Speaks is the only senior on a young team.

“I’m pretty excited for the future,” Schultz said.

Midfielder Calvin Lutzke, who earned Big East Conference honorable mention last season with three goals and three assists, graduated.

The Rockets are coming off of a winelss season (0-10).

“Our biggest goal is to play complete soccer. Just hoping we’ll play some good soccer regardless of the score line,” Schultz said.

The Rockets host Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran on Thursday to start the season, and host rival and defending Big East champ Oostburg on Thursday, Sept. 9. Both games are at 6 p.m.
