Calvin Oscar Huber

Calvin Oscar Huber went home to heaven on April 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, whom he cherished. He loved his Lord, his wife Gladys, his family and exploring the wonders of God’s creation, both professionally and recreationally.

Calvin was born on June 7, 1932, to Calvin H. Huber and Isabella K. Huber (Herman), the oldest of five sons. The family lived in Johnsonville, Wis., during his youngest years, then moved to Potter, Wis., where he grew up enjoying life with his brothers, especially next-in-line Ken. He also helped in his father’s butcher shop, Potter Meat Market.

Calvin graduated from Chilton High School in 1950. While there, he became fascinated with chemistry, enjoyed playing cornet in the band and building friendships with his classmates. He continued his education at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill. Cal completed a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and played in the concert band. He was encouraged by a close-knit group of men who became lifelong friends.

Calvin and Gladys Ruth Schmidt, the love of his life, were married on July 3, 1954, in Reedsville, Wis. Together, they moved to Verona, Wis., and Cal pursued his Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under Professor Irvin Shain, graduating in 1957.

For most of his career, Cal taught and did research at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and counted his relationships with his many students as his greatest accomplishment. Cal and Gladys worked with students through Intervarsity Christian Fellowship at UWM, providing support and hospitality and hosting international students.

They also faithfully served their church, Trinity Community Church in Brown Deer, Wis., and its outreach ministry, Trinidad Church, on the south side of Milwaukee.

Calvin is survived by his wife Gladys Huber; children Tom (Vicki) Huber, Carrie (Dan) Wiersma and John Huber; grandchildren Ryan (Becky) Huber, Katie (Brian) Lafferty, Kellie (Nathan) Miller, Sarah (Jason) Babcock, Anneka Wiersma, Calvin (Betsy Zandstra) Wiersma, Charlie Huber and Hannah Huber; great-grandchildren Noah, Kelsey, Landyn, Kaleb, Anna, Toby, Riley, Sadie, Gavin and Eli; brothers Tim (Mary) Huber and Jared (Dianna) Huber; sisters-in-law Gloria Huber and Judy Huber; and many nieces and nephews.

Cal was known for his thoughtful, humble, hardworking, adventurous and grateful approach to this life. More than anything, his life was centered and founded on his complete faith in God and utter confidence in the Gospel. “For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” Psalm 100 verse 5.

A worship service of celebration and thanksgiving for Calvin’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Cedar Community Lodge, 4274 Learning Center Dr., West Bend, WI 53095. Family and friends are invited to gather for the service and fellowship afterwards.
